The Life Changing Importance of Voice Development

Voiceover artists, actors and all professionals have many skills to learn. Perhaps one area that is overlooked or doesn’t get enough focus is voice development.

Our Voice is the Engine that carries all of our ideas, thoughts, and  plans to everyone we come in contact with. Voice development benefits not just voiceover artists and actors, but everyone. People with superior speaking skills have an enormous advantage over others who are less polished. All great athletes have workouts and its not because they don’t know what they are doing. It is because in this competitive world communication skills need to be honed to the highest levels. A trained voice is more responsive to a persons intent in a conversation. Having control over ones tone of voice and breathing is not only an asset in voiceover work, but also critical in communications both professional and personal.

Voiceover Artists Have To Know The Difference Between Screaming and Yelling - To Survive

There has been a lot of discussion about voice actors standing up for themselves when doing extreme voices for video games and other media. All those points are well taken.
Having said that, It is my opinion there should also be much more discussion about how to develop a well produced voice that just doesn't rely on "making hamburger" out of ones self to create a theatrical vocal effect.
A persons voice is the engine that does all the work. Developing it and fine tuning technique is very important. I have actually had some agents tell me that they don't want their actors learning voice development because it will make them loose their"naturalness" Well of course it does if you do it incorrectly and don't understand vocal production. They are reacting to some classes where actors do "voice exercises" that involve screaming until they're hoarse to "build up the muscle".
Yes there's a lot of stupid out there, it just takes some common sense to avoid it.
Voice development and breathing exercises give the voice greater range, sustainability, nuance and yes improved naturalness and believability.  The more control a person has over their voice, the more creative freedom they have because they aren't fighting vocal exhaustion. A voice is a powerful instrument that deserves to be developed and the best of care.

- Correcting Speech & Breathing Problems

Through the years may people have come to me for help with certain speech and articulation problems that were slightly defective as well as accent correction and of course shortness of breath (non medical).

In speaking, the principles of articulation, clarity and naturalness are the primary skills required for effective communication. These qualities can be refined and dramatically improved by using voiceover articulation techniques.

Learning cadence exercises and other voiceover techniques provides the reframe of coordination to help resolve a wide range of these problems. Fixing these kinds of issues can contribute in a major way to success in any professionals career.

Superior Speaking Skills Will Create Greater Success

People who have the most responsibility in business need the most effective communication skills. Our Voice is the Engine that carries all of our ideas, thoughts, and  plans to everyone we come in contact with. A leader with superior speaking skills has an enormous advantage over someone who is less polished. All great athletes have coach’s and its not because they don’t know what they are doing. It is because in this competitive world communication skills need to be honed to the highest levels.

How often after a meeting or presentation have we felt that we fell short of what was needed to succeed? The coaching of speech for business success is one of the most important investments an executive can make. It can literally increase ones income in ways that are life changing.
The most limiting factor in a persons career is often as simple as not developing their speaking skills. We don’t listen very closely to people who don’t impress us, and the main reason we aren’t impressed is because of how someone speaks.

We have entered a great new age where communication is dependent upon our ability to connect, and our ability to connect depends on what we decide to say and our manner of delivery. This is the result of the intensity of the information age. We cannot rely solely on the fact that we have the authority or the answer. We must have the ability to organize and personalize thoughts in order to be heard and understood. This has become of paramount importance in, corporations, hospitals, organizations and all of the service industries. How we communicate with our voices and how we organize ideas has never been as important as it is today. Our voice is the engine that carries our thoughts to people. Our voice and presentation is the point of first contact. The point of first contact must be maximized in order to achieve success consistently.
A business person gives many kinds of presentation to many different kinds of groups.
The vocal game plan needs to be different for each different circumstance. When giving a presentation, “one size dos not fit all”. The manner of a presentation to a group of sales people is different than the manner that is used to talk to investors, or a board, or a jury. Those different approach’s need to be worked out using a persons natural speech patterns and personality to communicate successfully.  Voice coaching is designed to orchestrate the various vocal elements for maximum natural impact without going outside the natural compass of ones voice or personality. Learn the secrets that Hollywood voiceover artists use to make millions, to take your career to a whole new level.

- Maintaining a Healthy Voice

We all enjoy the luxury of taking our voices for granted. We are a bit shocked when we get laryngitis and can’t speak. It’s a reminder of how important our voice is in our daily lives and how dependent we are on our ability to speak. I’d like to talk about healthy vocal production and voice improvement. I get a lot of questions about how much to exercise a voice without abusing it.
Speaking is a physical activity that can be perfected or abused just like any other sport. In regard to vocal exercise, more is not simply better. I have heard of people who yell and scream to build up the strength of their voice and yet are unaware that they are damaging their voices at the same time.
You only have one voice in this life and it has to last through the whole trip. Vocal Strength and stamina are necessary whether you’re a CEO, manager, teacher, lawyer, public speaker or politician.
When the voice is properly produced with good breath support, we can speak all day long and still sound as fresh as when we started in the morning.
When you are doing exercises you should never do them until your voice is tired and never do them until your voice hurts. You don’t want to try and create everything in the same hour or the same day.
It is more important to do vocal exercises 5 to 10 minutes twice a day, than to try and set aside an hour. Shorter sessions, more often, are more beneficial than long haul workouts.
Get in the habit of always warming up your voice before you give a talk or presentation. You want to standardize the feeling of speaking with an agile resonant warmed up voice. This will make you much more effective in any communication.
The natural responsiveness of your voice will sense the rhythm and cadence of a sentence much better when it is warmed up and this will improve your ability to express yourself clearly and persuasively.

- The Importance of Voice Exercises

Everyones voice is much more responsive when it has a regular workout routine. We are much more able to illustrate with nuance when our voice receives regular workouts. Tone painting and using different cadences to get our point across is much more natural when the voice is put through it's version of Yoga. Communication skills are improved by respecting and taking care of our voice just as we do for our bodies in general.
